Mystery as dozens of mutilated shark corpses wash up on beach with fins MISSING

Shocking footage shows the beach at Burry Port, Camarthenshire, covered in the mutilated corpses of the creature.

There are fears the harrowing sight was caused by shark finning – the practice of fishermen illegally removing the dorsal fins of some of the animals before chucking them into the water.

The sharks would have still been alive but, without their fins, would be unable to swim.

They would then sink to the bottom of the sea and eventually die of suffocation or being eaten by other predators.

The woman behind the camera – who did not wish to be named – said she stopped counting the number of sharks there were after “every wave brought more bodies”.

“It was mostly smooth-hounds down Burry Port, but heavily pregnant ones with pups hanging out of them,” she said.

“I dread to think how many were still floating in the sea.

“I’m sure what we saw was a small percentage of what was thrown back.”

Vince Sims said: “What angers me most of all is this is the result of trawling, not fishing with a line.

“They’ve got all the rules about how much we can or cannot do in regards to cod or bass capture, us fishermen would never kill fish, only for the plate. Wrong. Very wrong.”

Another fisherman, Ian Wish, said: “If you notice the fins have been cut off.

“It’s commercial fishermen selling the fins to the Chinese for medical purposes, then chucking the carcasses overboard.”
