A 23 month-old toddler was mauled to death by a neighbor’s pit bull after letting himself out of his enclosed front yard. The victim, who has not been named, suffered ‘extensive trauma’ after being savaged by the dog close to his home in Quinlan, Texas, on Monday morning.
Hunt County Sheriff’s Office said the little boy managed to escape his front yard before his family members realized he had gone. He was toddling down the road his family’s house was on when the neighbor’s pit bull jumped its fence and attacked him, NBCDFW reported.
Deputies called to the scene attempted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. They then rushed the child to the Hunt Regional Medical Center in Quinlan, but the youngster’s injuries were too severe for doctors to save him.
An autopsy to establish his exact cause of death is now set to take place. Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said: ‘I am heartbroken over this whole matter and my thoughts and prayers are with the family tonight.’
Investigators have seized the dog that attacked and killed the boy. A probe into the horrific killing is ongoing, although charges against the dog’s owner have yet to be filed.
Neighbors said the boy killed had been due to turn two at the end of July. They said his local area had become a dumping ground for stray dogs, although the animal that attacked the child was not one of those dogs.
