A two year-old boy picked up a handgun and accidentally shot himself dead as his mother fed her baby daughter in the next room, police say. Leighton Seals died shortly after midday on Tuesday after finding the nine millimeter Ruger handgun at a bedroom in his home in Fairmount, Indiana.
His mother Caci Seals, 22, was just feet away from him at the time of the shooting. Leighton’s father Noah Collins was out at the time. Explaining the tragedy that ensued, an Indiana State Police spokesman said: ‘Evidence indicates the boy pulled the trigger on the Ruger and was struck by a single bullet.’
Leighton was rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him, and he was later pronounced dead. A police spokesman said there was an ‘ongoing investigation’ into Leighton’s death.
The spokesman added that no further information on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including where the gun was when Leighton picked it up, would be released.
The spokesman added their findings would be passed to a prosecutor once the investigation had finished, meaning criminal charges could follow.
A GoFundMe page set up to pay for Leighton’s funeral said: ‘If you knew Leighton, you’d know that he was smart, funny and fun to be around. He loves his family and loved life.
