Donald Trump Jr has sparked outrage after urging his father to ‘go to total war’ over the US election result.
The president’s eldest son was branded ‘beyond reckless’ and told to ‘get a grip’ after calling for him to take action over the knife-edge results – with Democrat challenger Joe Biden hopeful of victory over his incumbent Republican rival.
In a post now censored by Twitter, Donald Trump Jr repeated the president’s earlier claims of election corruption – despite having no evidence to back the allegations.
‘The best thing for America’s future is for Donald Trump to go to total war over this election to expose all of the fraud, cheating, dead/no longer in state voters, that has been going on for far too long,’ Trump Jr wrote.
But Twitter warned users that ‘some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and may be misleading about an election or other civic process.’
Trump Jr retaliated, saying: ‘Twitter is censoring and flagging this of course.
‘Why would we not want to find out if these things exist? If they don’t then we will find nothing and people could maybe regain some faith in the process which doesn’t exist now,’ Mr Trump Jr wrote.
‘Why would they be against finding potential fraud?’ he added.
Dozens of Twitter users condemned Trump Jr, describing him as ‘irresponsible’ and ‘disgusting’.
Journalist Sam Stein responded to Trump Jr’s tweet: ‘Unfortunately, no one on the GOP side of things – at least no one with any clout – has the fortitude to tell Don Jr to get a grip.’
Many fear the bitterly contested election could lead to ‘violence on the streets’. Gun sales in the US rocketed in recent weeks, with more than 28million FBI background checks carried out – up 38% on last year.
Political journalist Mehdi Hasan responded to Trump Jr: ‘When your supporters are buying guns and turning up at vote counts with guns, many would argue it’s incitement to violence to be urging “total war over this election”.’
Meanwhile Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan lashed out at President Trump for ‘stoking the fires of civil war’ – telling him to ‘go gracefully’ and ‘let the votes be counted’.
Former Vice President Joe Biden is edging closer to victory after a surge in votes in key state Pennsylvania – but Trump refuses to concede.
Trump’s own niece warned of ‘dangerous months ahead’ as she told how the President will never get over being the ‘loser’.
