Donald Trump has now landed in Florida, where he will spend the remaining hour of his presidency before Joe Biden is sworn into office.
The outgoing US President left the White House for the last time earlier today, telling reporters: ‘It’s been a great honor, the honor of a lifetime.’ He added: ‘I just want to say goodbye but hopefully it’s not a long term goodbye. We’ll see each other again.’
He was then photographed waving as he boarded the Marine One helicopter, which then took him to board Air Force One. A red carpet and podium was set up at the Mar-a-Lago country club, in West Palm Beach, Florida, ready for him to land.
Trump will remain president until midday EST on Wednesday, when Biden is officially sworn in. He will be the first president in modern history to break from White House tradition by skipping the inauguration.
However, he did reportedly leave behind a note for his successor at the White House. Deputy press secretary Judd Deere declined to reveal what the note said, instead citing privacy for communication between presidents.
It comes after weeks of Trump refusing to publicly concede to Biden. During his farewell speech on Tuesday he refused to refer to the new president by name, and only talked of the ‘next administration’.
