Girl, 17, finally adopted by a loving family after 10 years in care

A 17 year-old girl has been adopted by a loving family after spending more than 10 years in foster care. Akyra Holstein was adopted by new mom Katie Holstein in Kentucky at the end of September, having spent 3,739 days living in 24 different foster placements.

Paying tribute to her new daughter’s attitude, Katie said: ‘The thing I love about her most is how resilient she is. Even though she’s been in foster care for so long only to be disappointed, she took a chance on me and my family and let herself be loved again.’

Akyra first met Katie in March 2019 through a respite care scheme, which gives primary foster carers time off from looking after kids. The pair hit it off, and Akyra stayed with Katie full-time from March this year, until their relationship was formalized by Akyra’s adoption in the fall.

Explaining their bond, Katie said: ‘She’d been here for a couple months at that point and I couldn’t imagine her not be here.’ Katie adopted another foster child she had been caring for on the same day – a one year-old boy called Thomas, who had spent almost all his life in care.

The ceremony took place over Zoom, with family, friends and Akyra’s case worker all there to watch Katie’s family grow, ABC News reported.

Akyra is still at high school, and will graduate in May.

Katie hopes Akyra will stay at home and attend a local college, although the ambitious teenager wants to go further afield to start preparing for her desired career in law enforcement.
