Some dissatisfied shoppers have taken to the Internet to vent their frustrations over the severe supply chain problems the US is facing, blaming President Joe Biden with the hashtag #BareShelvesBiden.
The taunting comes as the White House ramps up efforts to ease the extreme stress on supply chains that has caused lengthy shipping delays and store shelves to empty.
Biden on Wednesday announced a move to keep the Port of Los Angeles operational 24 hours, seven days a week. The port is North America’s busiest container terminal and the hope is that the extended hours will ease bottlenecks that are causing massive shipping delays and jacking up prices.
The round-the-clock operations began on Thursday.
The hashtag #EmptyShelvesJoe began trending this week, and expanded into #BareShelvesBiden as customers across the US began feeling the impact of the supply chain bottleneck.
Many took to social media to share their frustrations. On Friday afternoon, #BareShelvesBiden was in the top 10 trends on Twitter in the US.
Moody’s Analytics senior economist Tim Uy told CNN: ‘The White House is doing the right thing. But I wouldn’t characterize it as a gamechanger. It’s a step in the right direction.’
They estimate there will be a 10% increase in container flow from the ports.
‘With holidays coming up you might be wondering if the gifts you plan to buy will arrive on time,’ Biden said Wednesday. ‘Today we have some good news: We’re going to help speed up the delivery of goods all across America.’
