Son of federal judge is killed at home by gunman ‘posing as delivery driver’

The son of a US federal judge has been shot dead and her husband injured at their home in New Jersey.

According to the Associated Press, the gunman was disguised as a delivery driver when he shot Judge Esther Salas’s son Daniel, 20, and her husband Mark Anderl, who is a defence lawyer.

Judge Salas had been in the basement of the family’s North Brunswick home and she was not injured. Mr Anderl is recovering from surgery.

The FBI is still searching for the suspect.

Ms Salas, who sits in Newark, was nominated by president Barack Obama and confirmed in 2011 after a career as a magistrate judge in New Jersey and as an assistant public defender.

Among her cases in recent years was one involving Teresa and Joe Giudice from reality TV series Real Housewives Of New Jersey. They were jailed for financial crimes but she staggered their sentences so one of them was able to take care of their four children.

She has also presided over an ongoing lawsuit brought by Deutsche Bank investors, who claim the company made false and misleading statements about its anti-money laundering policies and failed to monitor “high-risk” customers, including sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

New Jersey senator Bob Menendez said: “My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”

New Jersey governor Phil Murphy called the shooting “a senseless act”, adding: “This tragedy is our latest reminder that gun violence remains a crisis in our country and that our work to make every community safer isn’t done.”
