An eight-months pregnant woman was shot and killed the day before her baby shower while sitting in a car next to her boyfriend.
Jennifer Hernandez, 20, and her boyfriend were leaving a gas station at Airtex Drive and Ella Boulevard in Houston, Texas, and were stopped at an intersection when a white vehicle pulled up behind them, said the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
A suspect inside the white sedan with tinted windows and a paper license plate fired several shots at the couple on Friday evening.
Hernandez and her unborn child, a boy, were both pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to KTRK. She was one month away from giving birth and her baby shower was scheduled for the next day.
‘We are absolutely devastated by Jennifer’s passing,’ a GoFundMe page for Hernandez states. ‘Nana was a wonderful daughter, a wonderful sister, and would have been a wonderful mother.’
Her boyfriend, 17, was shot twice but survived.
Sergeant Ben Beall of the sheriff’s office said road rage may have been a factor in the shooting, but that Hernandez’s boyfriend said they did not have prior contact with the suspect.
‘According to the driver, he said there was no interaction before that. They did stop at the gas station (but) he said he has no idea where the vehicle came from,’ said Beall. ‘It just came out of nowhere started shooting at him.’
The white sedan was last seen going eastbound on Airtex Drive toward Interstate 42, according to the sheriff’s office.
Anyone with information on the murder is asked to contact the sheriff department’s homicide unit or Crime Stoppers.
The fundraiser with a $20,000 goal for Hernandez’s funeral had received more than $3,900 as of Monday evening.
Family members told KTRK that Hernandez’s unborn child would have been their first grandchild and nephew. Hernandez apparently planned to open a nail business and was excited about her future.
