BANGALORE – The city of Hyderabad in southern India is trying to use facial recognition technology for everything, from stopping traffic violations to distributing subsidised food-grain, leading privacy activists to warn about a “total surveillance city”.
Facial recognition technology works by identifying distinct points on an individual’s face and creating a unique map of it. Telangana has seven facial recognition projects installed by different authorities, including the state police, the state higher education council, the Hyderabad airport, and the state road transport agency.
