Gruffalo 50p coin to launch – when it goes sale and how much it will be worth

After the roaring success of the Beatrix Potter 50ps, the Paddington Bear 50ps and the Snowman 50ps the next classic children’s character to be embodied in our currency is the Gruffalo.

The story of the Gruffalo has been delighting children for 20 years, and the commemorative 50p will be launched celebrating the anniversary of the beloved book’s release.

That means fans of Julia Donaldson’s classic will be able to grab a special coin to go with the book, toy and copy of the film.

But what will it look like, when will it launch and how much will it go on to be worth?

This is what we know about the Gruffalo 50p so far:

When will the Gruffalo 50p launch?

The Gruffalo 50p was announced late last year – but not a lot more details were given at the time.

However, The Royal Mint has said the highly anticipated coin will be available to order from the 19th of February.

"There’s someone coming out of the deep dark wood on 19 February 2019," a banner on The Royal Mint website reads .

If past form is anything to go by, it’s a good bet that there will be collectable coloured-in version available from the Royal Mint website on the day, a cheaper collector’s version and then more released into circulation that you might find in your change.

What will the Gruffalo 50p coin look like?

We know there will be a picture depiction of the Gruffalo on the back along with the inscription “THE GRUFFALO”.

Going from the experience of the Peter Rabbit, Snowman and Paddington 50ps, the picture will be iconic – quite possible the one from the cover of the original book.

It’s also possible that more than one 50p could be released, with each having a different depiction of the Gruffalo, as was the case with Paddington Bear.

Expect coloured in versions for around £60 and "Brilliant" proof coins for £10 that come in collector’s packs.

Obviously, the front of the coin will have a portrait of the Queen on along with the year.

How much will the Gruffalo 50p be worth?

This is the big quesiton.

The Snowman 50ps were in such high demand that they were selling for £103 just weeks after launch , while the original  Beatrix Potter 50p coins  are  still exchanging hands for more than £504 online .

However, not everything has done as well – with the Paddington Bear 50ps available for about 99p online and the Mrs Tiggy-Winkle Beatrix Potter 50p currently available for, well, 50p.

The good news is that you should know withing a few minutes of the coins going on sale on February 19th – with popular coins selling out fast and resulting in queues to get onto the Royal Mint website.

And in the worst case, you’ll still end up with a Gruffalo coin – which is no bad thing.
