The share of hotel and guesthouse operators optimistic about the next 12 months has halved, to just 40pc, and there’s evidence of a sharp fall-off in UK visitors.
Brexit, this year’s return to the 13.5pc Vat rate and rising costs, are all weighing on sentiment, according to a survey of members by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) ahead of its annual conference in Killarney which kicked-off yesterday.
The survey found 75pc of hoteliers said they are reassessing investment plans after the Vat rate reverted in January to the standard level, having been cut as an emergency measure after the crash.
While there is growth in bookings from North America and Europe, almost two-thirds of hoteliers say that their advance bookings from Britain are down.
