Thousands of people could be entitled to a discount on their energy bills to tide them over through winter.
Known as Winter Fuel Payments, it’s a Government scheme that pays anyone that qualifies a one-off payment to contribute towards their expensive November to January bills.
The payment itself can be anything from £100 to £300 – it’s entirely one-off and depends largely on your age and living situation – here’s how to find out who gets the Winter Fuel Payment.
For example, if you qualify for the scheme and were born between 24 September 1938 and 5 November 1983, you’ll get £200 if you live alone, or £100 if you live with someone who qualifies under the age of 80.
You’ll also get £100 if you live with a qualifying person above the age of 80 or currently live in a care home and claim benefits.
The amount can also vary based on whether you or your partner receive Pension Credit, JSA, ESA, or income support. This is how to find out exactly how much you’ll get.
Before your payment comes through, you’ll receive a letter telling you the date and amount to expect. It should then be paid into your account directly by that time.
If you’re eligible but haven’t had any word about the payment, you can call 0800 731 0160 to query it.
Any money you get is tax-free and won’t affect your other benefits such as the Warm Home Discount.
