The incident occured just as Her Majesty’s annual Christmas speech was broadcast to the nation. The man, who was allegedly carrying an offensive weapon, is being held in custody, Thames Valley Police confirmed.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall are also at Windsor, along with Prince Edward, his wife Sophie and their children, Louise and James, the Queen’s grandchildren.

The Royals are aware of the incident, police confirmed.

Superintendent Rebecca Mears, said in a statement: “An investigation is ongoing following this incident and we are working with colleagues from the Metropolitan police.

“The man has been arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody at this time.”
