Police have vowed to track down a motorist who posted a video of the moment his car reached speeds of more than 200mph.
The unnamed driver, believed to be in a £92,000 RS6, appeared to have just one hand on the steering wheel as he filmed his speedometer swiftly going from under the legal speed limit – 70mph – to reach 201mph.
After posting the footage online, internet users have suggested that it was on the M23 near Pease Pottage, West Sussex, and judging from the angle of the sun it appears to be an early morning drive.
Superintendent Andy Cox said: ‘We are aware of this horrific driving. I have tasked some investigative work to see if we can identify the car involved and the relevant location. If we do we will seek the most robust action possible.’
It is expected that they will use automatic number plate recognition cameras to identify the motorist.
The UK’s fastest ever speeding ticket was 192mph when the driver of a Nissan GT-R was caught in Northamptonshire. He was jailed for 28 months and banned from driving for 10 years.
He could have got away with it, but he was arrested for an unrelated offence and police found his videos of himself speeding when they searched his phone.
In second place was the driver of a Porsche 911 Turbo who managed to hit speeds of 172mph on the A420 near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in January 2007. He received a three-month prison sentence and was banned for three years.
In 2003 an unmarked police car was clocked at 159mph on the M54 when the officer decided to test how fast it could go. He hit 91mph in a 30mph zone. He was allowed to keep his job.
