‘Axeman’ in tense stand-off with armed police after climbing onto roof

Residents in houses along the street have been evacuated as police try to negotiate with the man. Officers were called to the road in Bolton, Greater Manchester, at 9am and have been there since.

Witnesses told Manchester Evening News the man had axe but police are yet to confirm this. It is reported that armed police and riot officers are at the scene and a drone was sent into the air.

Multiple emergency service vehicles, including ambulances and fire engines, are pictured at the scene.

Witnesses say they’ve arrived as the stand-off has gone on throughout the day.

Helena Vesty, reporter for Manchester Evening News, said: “The stand-off is now understood to be entering its fourth hour after police were called to Maple Close in Kearsley at around 9am.”

She later said: “Reinforcements arrive, the stand-off continues. There are several riot police officers waiting beside the houses.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers attended Maple Close, Kearsley, Bolton, at about 9am on Wednesday 12 May 2021 where a man has made his way onto a roof.

“The incident is ongoing and NWAS are also in attendance.”

North West Ambulance Service has also been contacted for information.
