BA flight in urgent landing 'after crew falls ill and smell of burning'

A British Airways flight to Italy had to make an emergency landing at Heathrow Airport shortly after take off.

A passenger on board claimed there was a smell of burning and that a crew member fell ill.

A video shows the moment flight 2596 to Verona returned to the runway with several emergency service vehicles at the scene.

A person in the background can be heard saying: 'This is the most 2020 thing that's ever happened to me.'

The landing reportedly took 10 minutes and all passengers were disembarked safely.

British Airways said the plane returned as a precaution following a minor technical issue and that it is standard procedure for emergency services to meet an aircraft.

A spokesperson said: 'The safety of our customers and crew is always our priority and the flight returned to Heathrow as a precaution due to a minor technical issue. 

'We've apologised to our customers and have organised a replacement aircraft so that we can get them on their way again as quickly as possible.'
