The leaked image shows approximately 24 people, including London’s 2021 mayoral candidate, Shaun Bailey crowded in a room. The picture shows the group posing for a picture and was allegedly held on December 14. At the time, London was under Tier 2 restrictions which banned mixing of households indoors.
In the picture, revealed by the Daily Mirror, the group can be seen raising glasses of wine with a buffer table laid out full of treats.
It is thought Mr Bailey, who doesn’t drink, left shortly after the picture.
Mr Bailey has now stepped down as the chair of the London Assembly’s police and crime committee.
A spokesperson for Mr Bailey said: “On the evening of 14 December 2020, at the end of the working day, the campaign hosted a post-work event to thank campaign staff for their efforts over the course of the year.
“This was a serious error of judgement and we fully accept that gathering like this as that time was wrong and apologise unreservedly”.
The Conservative party has revealed that the party has taken disciplinary action against four staff members involved in the Bailey campaign.
A spokesman said: “Senior CCHQ staff became aware of an unauthorised social gathering in the basement of [CCHQ] organised by the Bailey campaign on the evening of 14th December.
“Formal disciplinary action was taken against the four CCHQ staff who were seconded to the Bailey campaign.”
This is a breaking story, more to follow…
