Can I drive through a Tier 4 area?

Tier 4: Met Police enforce restrictions on London rule breakers

Tier 4 travel restrictions forced people to ditch Christmas plans in the UK, with strict curbs introduced on gatherings across the southeast. The Prime Minister’s plans go to great lengths to prevent further cases of a newly identified Covid strain spreading like wildfire across the country. But the Government has allowed some people to come and go from the areas, providing they have the right excuses.

Can you drive through a Tier 4 area?

Tier 4 area restrictions most closely resemble those of the national lockdown which ended on December 2.

Ministers have barred travel abroad and ensured those living within the restrictions remain at home.

But some of the Tier 4 areas neighbour those with much laxer rules, meaning people will have to travel through.

Thankfully for those who need to, people can travel through Tier 4 by car.

People living in Tiers 1 through 3 can drive through Tier 4 to travel on holiday.

Government advice states: “If you live outside a Tier 4 area you may still transit into or through a Tier 4 area to travel abroad if you need to, but you should carefully consider whether you need to do so.

“In addition, you should follow the public health advice in the country you’re visiting.”

Other than driving through, people can also visit a Tier 4 area, but only if they can’t stay put.

First and foremost, the Government has asked people not to travel into the highest restrictions from other areas.

But they have relaxed the rules for people who cannot live without passing between the tiers.

They apply to workers, people looking for childcare or those experiencing a medical emergency.

The Government’s rules state people can travel into a Tier 4 for:

  • Travel to work where you cannot work from home
  • Travel to education and for caring responsibilities
  • A visit (including staying overnight with) those in your support bubble – or your childcare bubble for childcare
  • To attend hospital, GP and other medical appointments

Other than these reasons, the Government asks people not to leave their homes if possible.

In their official advice, they said people should avoid travelling out of their immediate area.

The advice states: “If you live in a Tier 4 area, you must not leave your home unless you have a reasonable excuse (e.g. for work or education purposes).

“If you need to travel you should stay local – meaning avoiding travelling outside of your village, town or the part of a city where you live – and look to reduce the number of journeys you make overall.”
