Several Second World War veterans received cards, according to the official website of the Royal Family. They included Ruth Park-Pearson, who was born in Glasgow in 1922 and served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS).

Ms Park-Pearson now lives in North Yorkshire and celebrated her 100th birthday last Friday with her 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The posting of messages to mark birthdays from the monarch dates back to 1917 when George V when those celebrating their 100th birthday or 60th wedding anniversary were sent a telegram from the King.

Today cards are sent out to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthdays along with every subsequent birthday.

Couples celebrating their 60th, 65th and 70th wedding anniversaries are also sent cards along with every subsequent wedding anniversary.

During the reign of Elizabeth II, around 1.3 million cards were sent out to mark birthdays and anniversaries.

On Twitter, royal fans were delighted by the news that cards were being sent out by the new monarch.

Some recalled cards previously sent to relatives, while others praised Ms Park-Pearson for her youthful appearance.

User @clarestrand said: “Such a lovely card, my parents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept 8 and received a card from the late Queen Elizabeth II so special.”

Another user, operating under the handle @AlexBuker95, purred: “Many congratulations to all who received the cards. God Save The King!”
