People living in tiers one, two and three will be restricted to only meeting up on Christmas Day itself under new rules announced by the Prime Minister.
Boris Johnson has severely tightened the restrictions for the upcoming Christmas period amid fears hospitals will not be able to cope with a surge in new cases in the new year.
A relaxation of social distancing rules had been planned with three households permitted to mix for five days but this has now been scrapped.
Those living in London and the South East – which have now been placed into a newly created tier four lockdown – won’t be allowed to mix indoors at all over Christmas.
The Government was forced to take drastic action due to worrying new data which show the rampant spread of a mutant strain of coronavirus, particularly in London and the South East.
It was feared if mixing at Christmas was allowed to go ahead as planned, the NHS would be overwhelmed by the amount of new cases come January.
