Currently, laws are in place to prevent builders from carrying out noisy work outside normal hours. Officials have drawn up models to show how further extensions of the lockdown will affect GDP, unemployment and cash flows into businesses.
The modelling will be used by the Prime Minister and senior ministers to help decide which areas of the economy should be “privileged”, as they prepare to begin lifting some restrictions.
Under the guidance for the initial lockdown, work on sites was allowed to continue if it could be carried out safely, with social distancing in place.
But work on most sites stopped as firms found themselves unable to secure supplies, and workers had to self-isolate.
Ministers are now proposing to allow work on Sundays, as well as later between Mondays and Saturdays.
