School closures: Alok Sharma outlines government policy
It came as three councils backed down from shutting their gates after a legal threat by the Government.
Parents and children were caught up in the political crossfire as the Government ordered schools to stay open, while some London councils told them to close.
But Amanda Spielman, England’s chief inspector of schools, attacked Greenwich Council for taking the “easy option” of asking its schools to close.

Asked if they should stay open, Ms Spielman said: “I do believe it’s the right thing to do, rather than taking very short-term decisions to close.
“Arranging child care at short notice – we could be taking doctors, nurses off shift, out of vaccination clinics. It is so easy to call for closures, and forget the long-term price that children pay.
“Greenwich Council backed down while Islington and Redbridge withdrew plans to close.”
