Covid threat level moved to highest category as NHS faces being overwhelmed

The Covid threat level is reportedly moving up to its highest level, meaning that the NHS is on the brink of collapse.

BBC reporters tweeted that the step had been taken, with Nick Eardley writing: ‘Sources have told the BBC the Covid threat level – decided by the Joint Biosecurity Centre, which includes the UK’s four Chief Medical Officers – is being moved up to 5, the highest level.’

At red level five, there is a ‘material risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed’, and social distancing measures ‘increase’.

The measure is different to the tiering system, which currently has tier four as its highest level. It was set up in May amid the first wave.

It comes as Boris Johnson is set to address the nation tonight, with tighter restrictions expected to be announced.

This is a breaking story – more to follow.
