Crowds of mourners are flocking to the gates of Buckingham Palace following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the 96-year-old monarch died at Balmoral earlier today after more than 70 years on the throne.

Millions of people who have not known a world without the Queen are coming to terms with her passing.

Flags are being lowered to half mast across the country as it enters a period of mourning.

It will look to King Charles III for leadership during a constitutional shift which the vast majority of people alive today have never known.

Buckingham Palace announced the seismic news in a brief, matter of fact statement which belied the historic implications it carried.

It read simply: ‘The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

The passing of Britain’s longest serving monarch comes during a time of political change and economic worry for the country.

In a statement, the king said: ‘The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

‘We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

‘During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.’
