Dad admits slitting throats of his young children during lockdown

A dad has admitted murdering his two young children during lockdown while his wife was in the shower.

Nadarajah Nithiyakumar, 41, attacked and killed his son Nigish, three, and daughter Pavinya, 19 months, at their family home in Ilford, east London, in April.

Today he pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter by diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey, which was accepted by the prosecution.

The children’s mother, named locally as Nisa, was in the shower at the time of the killings and alerted the police. Pavinya was pronounced dead at the scene while Nigash was rushed to hospital in Whitechapel, where he later died.

Nithiyakumar, who worked as a shop keeper, was also taken to hospital for treatment for knife wounds. He was charged with the murder of his children after being discharged.

In a police interview, he accepted he had cut the throats of his children before turning the knife on himself. He said he had become depressed due to his work and described customers who had ‘upset him’.

He had thought about killing himself, but considered it would ‘ruin the children’s lives and they would go off the rails’, a court previously heard.

At the time of the attack, neighbour Reshna Begum, had described hearing screaming coming from the house for about 10 minutes, stating that she ‘knew something horrible must have happened’.

She later saw medics carrying a ‘little body’ in a bag outside. She went on: ‘My heart just sank, it’s devastating, horrific. From a mother’s perspective I’m still shaken from it, I can’t imagine what she feels at the moment.’
