Dramatic pictures show the roof of a double decker bus completely ripped off after a driver seemingly misjudged the height of a bridge.
The entire roof is seen surrounded by debris on a road in Salford, Greater Manchester.
The upper floor of the bus was left exposed following a smash into the bridge where the road runs beneath the Bridgewater Canal on Monday evening.
An onlooker has said there were ‘luckily’ no passengers on board at the time.
‘It was a low bridge that the bus tried to go under – but the bridge was too low and cut off the roof of the bus’, they told the Manchester Evening News.
‘It was around 9pm when the bus was approaching the bridge. I thought it was going to stop when they (the driver) realised the height restriction but it just carried on. Luckily there were no passengers on board.
‘The bus drove all way under which peeled the top off with ease.’
Diamond Bus North West has said the incident is under investigation and no one was injured.
Greater Manchester Police shared a picture of the scene just before 10pm, announcing that Barton Lane had been closed.
In a tweet shared by GMP Traffic, the force wrote: ‘Barton Lane, Eccles is currently closed both ways due to a bridge strike by a bus.
