Police are hunting a motorist who deliberately ploughed into a man in the street after video of the terrifying incident went viral on social media.
The footage, filmed in Newcastle on Saturday night, begins as a woman takes off one of her high heeled shoes and slams it into the windscreen of a black Ford Focus.
Two men then get into the vehicle and drag the woman to the ground as the vehicle mounts the pavement and reverses again at speed.
When a man runs over to help and tries to open the car door, the Focus is seen to mount the pavement again, before driving in the man’s direction.
It speeds straight towards him as he attempts to run off, slamming into his legs and sending him flying into the air before he hits a lamppost.
Northumbria Police confirmed that they had received reports of a disturbance at Groat Market in the city at around 9pm last night.
A spokesperson for the police said: ‘Following a disagreement in the street, an offender then entered a vehicle and drove it at a man, knocking him to the floor.
‘The occupants of the car then made off from the scene.
‘An investigation is ongoing into the incident and officers are now carrying out enquiries to trace those involved.’
Acting Inspector Michelle Jahangiri, of Northumbria Police, said it was lucky that those involved in the incident were not seriously injured.
She said the police would take robust action against anyone involved.
Inspector Jahangri added: ‘This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
‘We are aware of footage circulating on social media regarding the incident and would ask members of the public to respect the ongoing investigation.
‘Officers are the process of identifying the victims and offenders involved.’
