Dying pensioner, 84, burgled 'by couple who pretended to call ambulance'

An elderly woman was burgled while she was dying in her bed by two people who pretended they were calling an ambulance, according to police.

Ronald Crowther, 87, left his house in Brierfield, Lancashire, to search for help after his wife Dorothy, 84, suffered an aneurysm on October 16.

A man and woman allegedly offered to call an ambulance and entered the house, while Ronald returned upstairs to sit with his wife.

His wife of 60 years passed away shortly after. Her purse and mobile phone were later found to be missing.

Officers have released CCTV footage of a man and a woman they would like to speak to in connection with the alleged burglary.

The footage also shows Ronald banging on doors asking for help for his wife.

The couple’s daughter Janet Crowther Hindley said the family was ‘utterly heartbroken’ and ‘trying to deal with the loss’.

Son-in-law Steve said: ‘Ronald is still coming to terms with what has happened at the moment.’

PC Rob Bayley of Lancashire Police said: ‘To commit a crime like this on an elderly and vulnerable man in his hour of need is shameful and appalling and we are committed to finding those responsible.

‘The male victim believed the offenders, who were passers-by, were helping him by ringing for an ambulance while he went back upstairs to sit by the bedside of his dying wife.

‘But it has later transpired that they had in fact helped themselves to a purse, which was on a table in the front room and a mobile phone from inside a handbag, which was down the side of a chair.

‘I would ask anyone who saw these individuals around the time of the incident or anyone who think they might recognise them to please get in touch with any information they think would be useful.’
