Meghan has given a surprise interview to American talk show host Ellen, which will air on CBS in the US tonight. The show’s website, Ellentube.com said: “The activist and co-founder of Archewell will chat with Ellen about growing up and returning to California, as well as her New York Times bestselling children’s book The Bench.” Ellen released a trailer on her Twitter account and revealed the Duchess will appear on The Ellen Show on Thursday US time, while the interview will be broadcast on ITV2 in the UK within a week.

The announcement comes eight months after Meghan and her husband Prince Harry’s bombshell CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they were deeply critical of royal life and made a number of claims against the Firm.

In the now-infamous Oprah interview, the Sussexes claimed an unnamed member of the Royal Family had made a racist remark about the colour of their son Archie’s skin, while they also claimed the monarchy had failed to support the Duchess’ mental health.

Tonight’s interview will see Meghan in the company of one of her friends, with the Duchess and Ellen having struck up a close relationship after a chance encounter at an animal shelter.

According to Meghan, Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi bumped into her as she was cuddling an adoptable dog at the shelter in 2012.

The talk show host reportedly urged Meghan to adopt the dog.

Meghan recalled the encounter in an interview with Best Health in 2017, when she said: “Now I don’t know her, but Ellen goes ‘Is that your dog?’

“And I said ‘No’ and she’s like ‘You have to take that dog’.

“And I said, ‘Well, I’m deciding’ and she’s like ‘Rescue the dog!’

“It’s sort of like if Oprah tells you to do something.

“I’m still sitting there holding him and she’s like ‘Have you thought of a name for him yet?’ And I said ‘Well, I think I’d name him Bogart,’ and she’s like ‘You’re taking the dog home.

“And so she walks outside to get into her car but instead of getting in she turns around and comes and taps on the window glass and she yells ‘Take the dog!’

“And so I brought him home. Because Ellen told me to.”

The pair stayed in touch after they met and have since become close friends.

Ellen has since spent time in London with the Sussexes, while she bonded with Meghan over a passion for wildlife conservation.

She has also leapt to the defence of Harry and Meghan on her talk show, insisting that it was “not fair” seeing them “get attacked.”

She added: “They are two of the most down to earth compassionate people, they’re doing so much good for the world.”

Yet despite their close bond, Ellen once revealed she didn’t remember her first meeting with the Duchess.

She told her studio audience after Harry and Meghan’s 2017 engagement announcement: “That’s amazing.

“I mean, she adopted a dog because I told her to.

“I don’t even remember the story actually but obviously she does and she does whatever I tell her to do.

“So Meghan, if you’re watching, I have something else to tell you ‒ invite me to that wedding.”

Meghan Markle’s interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show will air in the US on CBS at 8pm.

It will be broadcast on ITV2 within a week of its US release.
