Sir Elton John’s relationship with Prince Harry has seemingly hit a stumbling block after the Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan Markle were snubbed for the singer-songwriter’s famous Oscars party. Tom Bower, who penned the 2022 book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors, made the claim after the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 12. It comes after Harry recently recalled his and Sir Elton’s relationship in his bombshell memoir Spare.
Sir Elton has long been associated with Harry, who is the youngest son of his close friend Princess Diana. Such was his close relationship with Diana, Sir Elton even performed at her funeral, with a reworked version of his iconic track Candle in the Wind raising money in her memory.
The songwriter, who has won a host of awards including his own Academy Awards and Grammys, came to the aid of the royal when four years ago Harry and Meghan faced intense criticism.
Speaking out in support of the couple, Sir Elton said he had become “deeply distressed” by the “distorted and malicious account in the press” when it emerged they had stayed at his property for a holiday.
Harry, however, outlined his disappointment with Sir Elton when it emerged the singer planned to serialise his memoir in the Daily Mail, due to his recent legal action with the newspaper.
He claimed the newspaper had made his life “miserable”, but Sir Elton replied that he was keen for a wider audience to “read his book”, leaving Harry to back off and not “push” the issue.
Harry added: “I loved him. I’ll always love him. And I also didn’t want to spoil the holiday.”
In another moment during Spare, which has become one of history’s fastest-selling non-fiction books, Harry described the iconic moment the singer appeared at his mother’s funeral in 1997.
Harry wrote: “He rose slowly, stiffly, as if he was one of the great kings buried for centuries beneath the abbey, suddenly roused back to life. He walked to the front, seated himself at a grand piano.”

He added: “Is there anyone who doesn’t know that he sang ‘Candle in the Wind’, a version he’d reworked for Mummy? I can’t be sure the notes in my head are from that moment or from clips I’ve seen since. Possibly they’re vestiges of recurring nightmares.”
But many are now hinting that Harry and Meghan are no longer as close to the 75-year-old as they once were after the pair did not appear at his legendary Academy Awards party.
Speaking on GB News, Mr Bower claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who quit the UK to move to the US in 2020, “weren’t even invited to Elton John’s party at the Oscars… they really are nobodies in Hollywood”.

The HIV cause is close to both Sir Elton, Diana and Harry’s hearts, and the Princess of Wales famously opened up the country’s first purpose-built HIV unit at London Middlesex Hospital in 1987.
Carla Speight, a PR consultant, claimed that Harry and Meghan actually didn’t attend as they wanted to avoid the possibility of negative press and the wrath of the entertainers on stage.
She said: “Their documentary wasn’t nominated. Meghan’s not currently acting and I don’t think Harry has any plans to either, though stranger things have happened with them recently.
“If they showed up to the Oscars, it would raise many questions as to why and ultimately it wouldn’t be a good look for them as it makes no sense.”
While Sir Elton is also close to Harry’s older brother and heir to the throne, Prince William, Sir Elton remains closer to the Duke of Sussex, a fact which was demonstrated by reports which suggested he spoke to the younger royal almost every day.
In 2018, a source close to the Royal Family told the Daily Mirror: “Elton speaks to Harry and Meghan every day. He’s an inspiration, an almost ‘motherly’ figure. He is a constant support, especially to Meghan, and is very protective of them both.”
The couple themselves also demonstrated their ardent relationship with Sir Elton by appearing in a clip ahead of his farewell concert, which would mark the Rocket Man’s retirement.
In the clip, Harry said: “Thank you for being the friend that you were to my mum. Thank you for being our friend, thank you for being a friend to our kids… we love you.”
