Facebook reveals new name in major rebrand of social media company

Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that the company will be renamed Meta.

The name change was announced at the company’s Facebook Connect event, which was used to outline its vision for a ‘metaverse’.

Zuckerberg first launched his company as TheFacebook 17 years ago.

It follows a chaotic few weeks for the company. Services, including WhatsApp and Instagram, went down twice earlier this month after it was hit by huge outages, later blamed on technological errors.

A former employee also gave damning evidence during a Senate hearing about the harm caused by Instagram to the body image and self-esteem of young girls.
