Fire breaks out high up tower block in south London

A fire broke out on the 18th floor of a London tower block this morning.

Around 60 firefighters rushed to the blaze on Deacon Street in Elephant and Castle. 

Flames were initially seen and the London Fire Brigade was called at 10.58am over reports that a balcony was alight. 

Eyewitnesses have shared photos and videos of smoke billowing out from the building.

In an update at 12.25pm the brigade said the fire had been brought under control.

Station commander Dave Hill said residents across three floors were evacuated.

He said from the scene: ‘Firefighters worked incredibly hard to bring the fire in Elephant and Castle under control.

‘Road closures are in place and there is heavy congestion. Firefighters are expected to remain on scene this afternoon and we encourage people to avoid the area.

‘Crews evacuated residents on three floors of the building who were affected by smoke.

‘There are currently no reports of any injuries.’
