'Human remains' found in woodlands near motorway

Suspected human remains have been discovered in woodlands near Swindon in Wiltshire tonight.

Police confirmed they are investigating after officers are believed to have found ‘old human remains’.

Wiltshire Police said it was conducting a ‘meticulous search’ of an area close to Junction 15 of the M4 motorway.

A large police presence was spotted near a small housing estate.

An eyewitness claimed to have seen police digging in Meadow Lane for several days.

Officers will spend the next few days searching for ‘relevant material’ before forensic analysis is carried out.

A road sign warned motorists to slow down while driving through the area.

The force thanked the public for their patience but warned the investigation may take several weeks.

Updates will be provided as and when possible, a Wiltshire Police spokesman said.

‘Specialist officers are currently conducting a meticulous search of the area to recover any relevant material before forensic scientific analysis is conducted,’ they added.

‘This sort of investigation can take a number of weeks however we will endeavour to provide updates where we can as this work continues.

‘Members of the public will see a police presence in the area over the next few days and weeks.’
