In an interveiw with Sky News’ Kay Burley, the former Health Secretary stated that he expected a coronavirus vaccine to be found before Christmas. However, Mr Hunt stated that he expected it to be Easter 2021 by the time everyone can get the vaccine.

Ms Burley asked: “How concerned are you that we are nowhere near close enough to getting this vaccine to help us out certainly not this winter but maybe not even by next winter?”

Mr Hunt said: “If I was a betting man, I would say that we are likely to find a vaccine that works before Christmas.

“There are four main contenders there in the third stage and things are looking quite encouraging.

“Wouldn’t it be fantastic if it was the British one that pulled through? The Oxford vaccine.”

He added: “So that is encouraging, it will take longer to distribute it and there are particularly complications because at the same time people are having flu jabs, we have got to make sure that works.

“I am still hopeful by Easter we will have been able to get everyone a vaccine.

“That will be the moment that life can start to return to normal.

“That is pure conjecture, I am not a scientist, I don’t have a crystal ball, but I still think there is a possibility that it where we can get to.”
