Appearing on the show on Tuesday, the lady said she joined the panic at the pumps because she did not know how long it will take until the chaos is resolved and wanted to make sure she had enough. But her comments sparked a furious backlash as people took to social media to condemn the actions which are being repeated up and down the country as Britons storm the nation’s forecourts.

The driver told the show how she had “just under three quarters” of a tank of petrol but decided to join the queues.

She insisted: “I still thought I don’t know how long this will take to resolve.

“It could be more than a week!”

She went on to explain how she was “frightened” that she was going to run out of petrol if she didn’t join the rush to the pumps this morning.

She added: “I have got a job to do, I have got my mother to look after, shopping, you know!”

The driver insisted “people are frightened” by the current chaos and whether they will be able to get enough fuel to carry on their daily lives.

She concluded: “People have got livelihoods that depend on driving!”

But the comments triggered a frustrated response from a raft of viewers who felt her actions, like many others’ across Britain, is unnecessary.

@hobbitpets tweeted: “So the woman that apparently NEEDED to fill up as she had 3/4  tank get out the queue you DONT NEED IT.”

While @Kelspk slammed: “Why are people filling up when they have 3/4 tank already?! Why are people wasting their fuel when half full, driving round to find more?!

“I have less thank a quarter and will struggle to find somewhere to fill up!”

While @nfisher38 said: “There is a driver shortage across the whole of Europe! The fuel shortage has come about by panic buying, filling 3/4 fill tanks and three cans by selfish people.”

Comedian Russell Kane also joined in the chorus of criticism on Good Morning Britain, he said: “There would be enough fuel now the initial panic has come if we all used the amount we need.”

“What is wrong with people? We need to become adults… If you have a quarter-tank or below, in you come – fill your boots. Not a maximum order, a minimum order!”

Mr Kane added: “If you’re there to stick a fiver in because you’ve got to go to B&Q at the weekend with Peggy to pick up a new lawnmower, back you go – you’ve already got 90 percent of your tank.”

Shortages of HGV drivers have caused supply chain issues with garages up and down the country forced to close down due to shortages of fuel.
