Royal expert Daniela Elser highlighted how the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are resting a hand on the other’s knee in the snap. Also pointing out that William is wearing shorts, Ms Elser said it was “not your usual royal Christmas card”.

Ms Elser added that the festive card shows the Cambridges are doing things on their “own terms”.

Writing for news.com.au, the royal commentator said: “What really sets this apart from previous stodgy fare of this sort is not only William’s casual attire but the fact that he and Kate have their hands on each other’s legs, putting on the most touchy-feely display by a monarch since King Henry VIII spotted Anne Boleyn and started to get ideas.

“This wasn’t just a tender intimacy but a much racier, if you will, display that stands in glaring contrast to their usual reserved and restrained public demeanours.

“And all of this adds up to something particularly interesting in terms of what this card reveals about what William and Kate are up to right now.

“That is, it highlights the degree to which the duo are showing little appetite to obediently toe the line and rigidly, blindly adhere to The Firm’s status quo.

“What this card really signals is the extent to which they intend to do things their own way and if that means seeing the one-day King William IV’s pasty gams, then so be it.

“William and Kate might be inexorably making their way towards the throne but the message that is increasingly coming across is that they intend to do it on their own terms.”

The Cambridges’ official Christmas card photo for 2021 was released last Friday.

The image was shared by Kensington Palace and posted on the couple’s social media accounts with the caption: “Delighted to share a new image of the family, which features on this year’s Christmas card.”

The picture was taken in Jordan earlier this year.

William is pictured sitting on a gold pouffe next to wife Kate, with the pair resting a hand on the other’s knee in a rare romantic gesture.

Prince George, eight, and Princess Charlotte, six, sit next to their parents, while three-year-old Prince Louis is sitting on a rug in front of his mother.

The family look relaxed in casual outfits, with William in beige shorts.

Kate looks typically stunning in a full-length green dress.

George and Louis also sport shorts, while Charlotte wears a blue and white gingham dress.

The Cambridges are expected to spend Christmas in Sandringham with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Royal fans will be hoping to catch a glimpse of the royals if they attend church on Christmas Day.
