The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have come a long way since they first met as first-year students at St Andrews University in 2001. The world watched as they celebrated milestone after milestone, from their graduation in 2005 to their wedding in 2011 and to welcoming their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis into the family. Despite being subject of intense scrutiny and speculation, the couple has normally been tight-lipped about their relationship.
They famously went through a major break-up in 2007, and when asked about the split during his engagement interview with Kate, the future King just said they had to “find their own way” and “grow up”.
They did not disclose any further information about the reasons behind the decision
According to a 2007 report by the Daily Mail though, the reason behind their much talked-about split was because William felt “the fun” had disappeared from their relationship.
Royal correspondents Laura Collins claimed William did not want to be nailed down and thought he was too young to get married.
The future King reportedly told his friends that Prince Harry’s girlfriend at the time, Chelsy Davy, was “more fun than Kate” and also “very bright”.
Following the split, the Prince immediately had some carousing in London nightclubs.
According to the report, Kate was “humiliated” by William’s antics and exchanged some harsh words with his ex-boyfriend.
The report reads: “It was the first such warning she had dished out over the course of their four-and-a-half-year-relationship.
“Kate had had enough and words were exchanged.

“‘Kate told William that he was making her look bad’, one of her friends explained.
“‘She has coped for years with girls flinging themselves at her boyfriend and for a while she found it humorous and even flattering.
“‘But after his recent behaviour she gave him an ultimatum and told him that over the time he behaved like that in public he was cheapening her image as well as his own.
“‘She told him she wasn’t prepared to be treated like a doormat and that his carefree behaviour was affecting her image.

It did not take long for William to realise he had made a mistake.
After only three months, the couple was back together.
The two dated for three more years before getting engaged and married in a fairytale ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
