Ms Raducanu, the youngest British player to ever win a Grand Slam, looked back on the time she spent with the Duchess of Cambridge last September for People Magazine. The two women played tennis together during a quick doubles game as part of an event for the Lawn Tennis Association, of which the royal is a patron.

The Duchess is a keen tennis fan and regularly attends the Wimbledon championships.

She has been a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since taking over from the Queen in 2016.

“Her Royal Highness is passionate about supporting grassroots tennis and encouraging young people from all backgrounds to become involved in the sport,” Kensington Palace said in a statement.

On top of the Duchess’ “incredible forehand,” Emma Raducanu remembers how ordinary William’s wife was when they met.

She said: “It was a pretty surreal experience to be playing tennis with the Duchess.

“It was kind of crazy, but she was really down to earth and normal.

“So I found it a really cool experience.”

The US Open winner added: “I think the Duchess is such a great inspiration, just with how she handles everything and how she does so much good work for charities.

“She’s a real inspiration to the whole country.”

After they met, Kate Middleton shared kind words about Raducanu, saying she thought the 19-year-old was “seriously impressive.”

According to royal expert and author Duncan Larcombe, the Duchess looked “starstruck” to be meeting one of the biggest names in her favourite sport.

He told OK!: “Kate is still capable of being absolutely blown away by meeting someone like Emma. She must have thought, ‘what a great day at the office!’

“Kate is human, and despite the incredible things she does in her career, she’s still capable of feeling blown away and starstruck, and she genuinely looked that way in Emma’s presence.

“She’s loved tennis for so many years, and her children have even joined tennis clubs. It’s a big love of hers, so I bet she couldn’t believe her luck to enjoy such a great experience with a record-breaker like Emma.”
