Last night, Kate joined her husband Prince William at the first awards ceremony for his environmental Earthshot Prize. The ceremony, which took place at Alexandra Palace in London, saw five winners being recognised for their work helping to tackle climate change and environmental issues.

Each winner received a prize of £1million to further develop their initiatives.

During the event, Kate spoke of the importance of the “thriving natural world” and the role it plays in helping both our physical and mental health.

Her passionate plea came ahead of her presenting a prize in the protect and restore nature category.

She said: “A thriving natural world regulates our climate, nurtures our physical and mental health, and helps feed our families.

“But for too long, we have neglected our wild spaces. And now we are facing a number of tipping points.

“If we don’t act now, we will permanently destabilise our planet.

“And we will rob our children of the future they deserve.

“Our Earthshot Prize Finalists show us, however, that we can, by 2030, see the natural world growing, not shrinking, for the first time in centuries.”

To tie in with its sustainability orientated messaging, no celebrities were flown to London for the ceremony and no plastic was used to build the stage at the event.

Ahead of the prize-giving, the couple appeared on the green carpet together at the event.

Mother-of-three Kate re-wore a lilac Alexander McQueen dress made for her in 2011, and her ensemble was met with delight from royal fans who took to social media to praise the Duchess.

She had previously worn the dress to a BAFTA dinner in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile William opted for a black polo neck and a recycled dark green velvet jacket,

It comes as guests were asked to “consider the environment” when choosing an outfit, to tie in with the event’s ethos and theme of sustainability.

The senior members of the Royal Family rubbed shoulders with celebrities at the event, including Dame Emma Thompson and Emma Watson.

Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and KSI were among artists that performed at the event, and to tie in with the sustainable messaging, their music was powered by 60 cyclists pedalling on bikes.

Prince WIlliam and Kate were also witnessed speaking to environmental icon Sir David Attenborough, who joined forces with the Duke of Cambridge to launch the Earthshot Prize scheme in 2020.

While this year’s event was held in London, William hinted that next year’s Earthshot Prize awards could be held in America.

During the ceremony the Prince said: “So for the second year, we need to pass the baton to a country whose leadership is essential for all five of our Earthshots.”

“Where better than the nation that inspired the Moonshot all those years ago?

“I’m delighted to announce that The Earthshot Prize will be heading to the United States of America in 2022.”
