The Duchess dazzled fans and royal observers with her stunning Jenny Packham gown, as she graced the red carpet. However, her choice of dress was more than just a fashion statement and a desire to look glamorous. Kate was paying a sweet and subtle homage to her husband’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
“Kate admired Diana’s taste in fashion before William came into her life,” a source close to the Duchess told Us Weekly.
“During her school days she’d tell friends that Diana was her style icon.”
They added that Kate was attempting to honour the memory of her late mother-in-law by “channeling the dress Diana wore at the View To A Kill premiere.”
In 1985, Diana attended the premier of ‘A View to a Kill’ at the Odeon Leicester Square cinema with Prince Charles.
She wore a silver lame dress by British designer Bruce Oldfield, paired with matching silver stilettos.
Diana’s glittering gown was, like Kate’s, long-sleeved and cinched at the waist.
It also featured elevated structured shoulder pads and a plunging V-neck, two standout characteristics of Kate’s Bond dress.
This is not the first time that the Duchess of Cambridge has given a sweet nod to the fashion sense of her illustrious royal predecessor.
Kate famously donned a Jenny Packham blue and white polka dot china dress, when she and William announced the birth of Prince George back in 2013.
Her choice of dress immediately brought to mind the green polka dot outfit worn by Diana when she brought Prince William home from the hospital in July 1982.
