The London Fire Brigade tweeted the road – which is home to several London theatres – has been closed in both directions as firefighters deal with the incident. They urged people to avoid the area.

They tweeted: “Shaftesbury Avenue is currently closed in both directions due to large gas leak.

“#Soho firefighters are assisting partner agencies.

“Please avoid the area if possible as there will be a lot of traffic congestion on surrounding roads.”

The City of Westminster Police also urged people to avoid the area and said traffic is likely to be “disrupted for some time”.

MSP Westminster tweeted: “A number of road closures are in place while engineers work to fix a gas leak in the #ShaftesburyAvenue #Westminster area.

“Some buildings/shops evacuated as a precaution.

“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, traffic likely to be disrupted for some time.”
