An “unknown white powder” was reportedly delivered in an envelope to an office block in the street. Photos from the scene show forensic workers, paramedics and police officers. Piccadilly Gate, a 10-storey building housing multiple government agencies, has been evacuated.
People have been urged to avoid the area.
The cordon on Store Street extends from the junction with London Road and Jutland Street.
The street is close to Piccadilly railway station.
The city centre branch of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) tweeted: “We are currently dealing with an ongoing incident on Store Street, Manchester City Centre.
“Store Street is closed between London Road & Jutland Street, with a police cordon in place.
“Please can you avoid the area whilst emergency services are dealing with this incident. Sgt K.”
In a statement, GMP said: “Shortly before 2.30pm officers were called to a report that an unknown white powder had been delivered in an envelope to Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester.
“The building has been evacuated as a precaution and a cordon and road closures are currently in place. Please follow @OfficialTfGM for updates.
“Emergency services are in attendance and enquiries are ongoing.”
