Mass evacuation after spillage of 'unknown substance' in city centre

A building in Birmingham has been evacuated after an ‘unknown substance’ was spilled.

Parts of the city centre have come to a halt after this afternoon’s ongoing incident at the Lord Chancellor’s office.

Trams have been stopped between Corporation Street and Bull Street, and people have been urged to avoid the area.

West Midlands Police arrived at the scene just after 4.30pm after the building was evacuated.

Around 30 firefighters from six crews also rushed to their aid, and the cordon was widened.

A statement from the force read: ‘We are currently at the Lord Chancellors office, Bull Street, Birmingham.

‘We were called to Bull Street at around 4.35pm after the building was evacuated.

‘There is a cordon in place while our colleagues from West Midlands Fire Service investigate the spillage of an unknown substance.’

Bull Street is currently closed, and the incident has also affected the tram services, which have been blocked from both directions.
