Earlier today it was announced that the UK has 2,988 new cases of coronavirus registered in the last 24 hours. The Health Secretary stated that the UK Government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary to prevent a further spread of COVID-19.

Mr Hancock was asked: “Is another lockdown still an option on the table?”

The Health Secretary replied: “We will take whatever action is necessary, but the first line of defence is that people should follow social distancing.

“We have also got the testing and the tracing, and they are happening at record rates.

“We can use and we will use local lockdowns if that is what is necessary.

“But the first line of defence for everybody no matter who you are, no matter how old you are is to follow that social distancing so that we do pass it on to people who will end up hospitalised or worse.

“Workplaces are COVID secure, schools are COVID secure, it is really important people follow the social distancing at all times.”
