Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently claimed they had little control over their lives when members of the Royal Family, with the Duchess pointing out she didn’t even have access to her passport, car keys or drivers licence. But royal insiders have spoken out on how the couple behaved before stepping down, and claimed the Duke and Duchess were actually the ones “calling the shots”.

In the months leading up to Megxit, royal sources said Meghan and Harry were keen to carve out a role which allowed them to earn a living whilst also remaining inside the Royal Family.

An insider told the Telegraph: “There was a constant dialogue from the couple along the lines of: “Why can’t we do this?

“You can’t stop us from doing what we want to do’.

“They were calling the shots and would be the ones instructing the press office on what line to put out.”

These insider comments run counter to the claims made by Meghan in her recent sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey.

During the two-hour chat, the royal accused the Firm of not doing enough to defend her against negative press coverage.

She also claimed she had little control over her day-to-life and said she had surrender several personal items.

The Duchess said: “When I joined that family, that was the last time – until we came here – that I saw my passport, my driver’s licence, my keys.

“All that gets turned over.

“I didn’t see any of that anymore.”

Meghan also said she wasn’t allowed to go for lunch with her friends or pop out for coffee with her mum, Doria Ragland.

She said the isolation made her feel “lonely”, and later revealed she had felt suicidal when pregnant with Archie, at the start of 2019.

Harry also opened up on how he felt while being a senior royal, and said he often felt “trapped”.

He told Oprah: “I myself was trapped. I didn’t see a way out.

“I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped.”

The Duke, who is the Queen’s grandson, added he was “trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are”.

During the bombshell interview, Harry also claimed the couple “didn’t have a plan” when they first decided to quit the Royal Family.

But the Telegraph has revealed the couple were in talks with a US streaming service a year before they announced they were stepping down.

The couple held a series of meetings with Quibi, a now-defunct entertainment platform, in early 2019.

A source with knowledge of the situation told the newspaper: “There were well-developed proposals in place with Quibi from early 2019.” has contacted Buckingham Palace and representatives of the Sussexes for comment.
