Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will always be “number two”, a royal expert has warned. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s future “trajectory” was compared to that of Harry’s great-aunt, Princess Margaret. Andrew Morton, author of the bestselling biography ‘Diana: Her True Story’, spoke to the Royally Obsessed podcast about the similarities.

He told listeners: “At the end of the day, Harry and Meghan were ancillary branches of the Royal Family.

“They were not central branches of the Royal Family.

“So they were going on the same trajectory as Princess Margaret.

“When she was 19, she was the most glamourous woman.”

Mr Morton continued: “She was matched with Elizabeth Taylor, all furs and jewels and looking fabulous.

“But she was number two, and it is the same with Meghan and Harry, number two.

“Meghan can look pretty as all hell.

“But she is still the one who will have to curtsy to Kate Middleton.”

Queen 'had to accept Margaret's rebellions' says expert

The biographer added: “And I am sure that they didn’t properly appreciate that.

“But it does mean that as the years tick by, Meghan and Harry will become more and more irrelevant.

“That’s as George, Louis and Charlotte grow, develop and become the tutors of the tabloids.”

Harold Brooksbank, a British genealogist, claimed the Countess of Snowdon’s “trajectory” in life was severely altered due to her sister, the Queen

In 1995 he wrote: “In my opinion, the Queen barring her from marrying Townsend was the turning point to disaster for the Royal Family.

“After Princess Margaret was denied marriage, it backfired and, more or less, ruined Margaret’s life.

“The Queen decided that from then on anyone someone in her family wanted to marry would be, more or less, acceptable.

“The Royal Family and the public now feel they’ve gone too far in the other direction.”
