The Duke and Duchess of Sussex cemented their independence from the Royal Family yesterday as it was announced the couple will make content for Netflix. Their deal will commit them to produce television shows, feature films and more for the streaming giant. The news marks the first concrete arrangement the couple has made since their move across the pond.
What will Meghan and Harry’s Netflix shows be about?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have thrown their support behind several movements and organisations as a couple.
While their royal lives committed them to select causes, they have continued their dedication separate of the Firm.
They most notably contributed to the discussion on racial injustice in the US, drawing both criticism and admiration from the general public.
The couple confirmed they hope to focus on select themes rather than subjects, however.
In an official statement following the news, they said they wanted to inform and encourage their audiences through their own experiences.
They added they hoped to “unlock action” through the content they create.
They said: “Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection.”
“Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.
“As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens.
“We are pleased to work with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action”.
Ted Sarandos, co-CEO and Chief Content Officer at Netflix said he was excited to welcome the couple’s stories to the platform.

He said: “Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership.
“We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.”
According to Deadline, several projects have already sprung from the deal.
These include an “innovative nature docu-series” and “an animated series that celebrates inspiring women”.
The Duke and Duchess have explored both of these subjects before, but the Duchess has taken the lead.
She narrated nature documentary Elephants, and the proceeds from her appearance went to an elephant protection charity.
The Duchess also co-edited the September issue of British Vogue last year, named “Forces for Change”.
She penned profiles on 15 women she found inspirational, amongst them climate activist Greta Thunberg and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
