Meghan bonded with Harry over childhood ‘parallels’ to Diana, expert claims

A royal expert has said that both Meghan Markle and the late Princess Diana “came from places of pain in terms of their childhood”.

The late royal went through the trauma of her parent’s very-public divorce, while Meghan’s parents split when she was very young.

According to royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop, Meghan bonded with Prince Harry over her, although different, “parallel” challenges with his late mother.

Meghan is estranged from her father, Thomas Markle Sr – with their relationship beginning to feel the strain around the time she was due to officially join the Royal Family in 2018.

Despite their wedding being more than five years ago, Thomas has yet to meet his son-in-law, as well as his two grandchildren through Meghan.

Speaking to OK!: “When you have that growing up slightly as an outsider within the family, you can see that slightly parallel in the way in which Diana and Meghan both identified as outsiders within the Royal Family.”

The royal expert added: “If you can find someone who understands them, that’s really helpful and I think Harry found that with Meghan and I think Meghan would also share that with Diana.”

According to Dr Dunlop, Diana was forced to “find a path outside the Royal Family” following her divorce from the then-Prince Charles.

The expert concluded by stating that Meghan might feel she “relates to aspects of Diana’s legacy”.

Diana’s death in 1997 meant that Meghan, Archie and Lilibet never got to meet the late royal.

Despite this, Harry has made sure to keep “grandma Diana’s” memory in his US-based home.

In Meghan and Harry’s Netflix series, which was released last year, one touching scene shows how the couple have hung up a picture of the Duke’s late mother on the wall in their home.

Meghan is seen holding their son up to a sweetly-placed photograph and says, “That’s your grandma Diana”.

In the series, Harry is also seen talking about his mother, who passed away when he was just 12-years-old.

Although admitting that he doesn’t have many early memories of her, he said that he will always remember her “cheeky laugh”.

Sharing his own likeness to his mother, Harry said: “…and I’ll always be that cheeky person inside”.
