Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is due to give birth to her first baby any day now. But the Duchess has been subjected to a lot of negative coverage in the press, leading to friends far and wide to jump to her defence. Her husband, Prince Harry, has long condemned the media and online trolls for abuse against Meghan.
Now, Prince Harry’s new business partner Oprah – who attended Meghan and Harry’s wedding – has told the world about the Meghan she knows.
On Wednesday, Oprah told CBS This Morning: “I think she’s being portrayed unfairly.
“I feel that if people really knew her they would know that she is not only everything we perceive of her in being graceful and dynamic in holding that position, but she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart.”
A month after Meghan confessed she does not feed into negativity by looking at Twitter, Oprah reiterated that the royal mom-to-be “does not read anything.”
She said: “I think that’s remarkable that despite everything that’s going on she does not read anything.”
Oprah’s best friend and business partner, Gayle King, attended Meghan’s baby shower in New York City last month.
She is also a big fan of the Duchess, saying: “She’s very kind. She doesn’t seem to buy into [her bad press] though.”
Oprah also revealed she has a bond with more than just the Royal couple: she’s also close to Meghan’s mum, Doria Ragland, even inviting her to do yoga and have lunch with her at home in California.
She told Entertainment Tonight: “She’s great at yoga, so I said, ‘Bring your yoga mat and your sneaks in case we just want to do yoga on the lawn.’
“So one of the bags was a yoga mat and the other was lunch.”
She also cleared up the rumours going round after Doria was seen leaving Oprah’s home laden in bags.
She said: “Doria said, ‘I love kumquats,’ and I said, ‘I have a kumquat tree! You want some kumquats?’ So it was a basket of kumquats, people.
“For all of the people who said I am getting her gifts and I’m trying to bribe her for an interview, they were kumquats.
“If kumquats can get you an interview, I’m all for it!”
Oprah’s support of Meghan is the latest in a long list of those who’ve defended the Duchess.
In February, actor George Clooney said: “She is being pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself. And we’ve seen how that ends.”
And shortly before that, a group of her friends spoke to PEOPLE magazine and said: “We worry about what this is doing to her and the baby. It’s wrong to put anyone under this level of emotional trauma, let alone when they’re pregnant.”
